The West Indian Regiment

The West Indian Regiment

The WIR were the British colonial forces raised in the Carribean colonies during the 19th century and were utilized during the First World War and colonial conflicts in Africa. Their original battle was New Orleans in 1815 where they were sent in the belief that they would survive the climate better. However, the southern US are not very tropical in the winter, thus many men died of sickness due to the climate which European soldiers were much more suited for.
Eventually, the regiment served in the First World War

In its later life, the WIR eventually formed the basis of the armies of the newly independent countries which became part of the Commonwealth.

One of my co-workers had served in the Jamaica Regiment prior to becoming an English teacher in Japan.
