Commonwealth Air Training Plan Stanley Airfield
Stanley Airport is now a small airfield which is a grass runway allowing for small planes to fly in. Sadly some of the hangers burned earlier this year. I was only able to get the sign and colours in this shot. The gate was secured and it's in a rather extremely rural area of Hants County Nova Scotia.
As I drove across the Kennectocook River, the steel bridge must date from the war. I couldn't help but think if I was a young man learning to fly, the small base was perfect for focusing on training as there would be naff all else to do. The nearest town in the 1940s would have been an hour by country ba k roads.
